St. Andrews Episcopal Church Annual Pancake Supper February 16th
St. Andrews Episcopal Church invites the community to join in their annual Pancake Supper on Shrove Tuesday, February 16 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. For a donation of $4.00 for adults (children under 12 are free), participants will share a meal of pancakes, bacon, and juice.
Shrove Tuesday is the last day of the Epiphany season. This, the day before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, was traditionally the last day for eating luxurious foods before the austerities of the Lenten fast, when most such things were forbidden. Pancakes were a way to use up rich foodstuffs such as eggs, milk, and sugar before the fast began. It is also called Fat Tuesday in English, Mardi Gras in French, or Carnival (from the Latin carne vale, farewell to meat) in many of the Mediterranean languages.
The literal meaning of the English word shrove comes from "shrive," to confess. It was originally a day for going to church and confessing one's sins before Lent.
St. Andrews is located at the corner of 5th and Woodrow. For further information call 765-2378.
